All 335-series engines use the same 8-bolt valve cover design. Early 400s ('71-'74) used the same painted steel valve cover as 351C 2V and most 351C 4V engines. The early style covers have the “Power by Ford” logo stamped in the top.

When Ford introduced the 351M in the 1975 model year, the M-block painted steel valve cover was re-styled with the Ford oval design stamped in the top. The later style valve cover was used on all 351M/400 applications until M-block production ended in 1982.

The following table lists part numbers for M-block valve covers.

Engine and transmission mounts

The M-block engine mount’s functional design (i.e., attachment to the block and frame brackets) never changed from the original 400 design in 1971, but there were various improvements in materials and engineering details over the years.

The following table lists service part numbers for M-block engine mounts. These mounts can be used on any car or truck 351M/400 application.

Flywheels and flexplates

All M-block (351M and 400) engines used in cars were equipped with automatic transmissions. The only M-blocks equipped with manual transmissions were the truck engines used in F-series pickups and Broncos, starting in the 1977 model year. Therefore, all M-block flywheels are truck parts.

When the M-block was introduced in trucks, the 351M and 400 had different flywheel parts to accommodate different sized clutch disks. The 351M was equipped with an 11" diameter clutch disk, and the 400 was equipped with a 12" clutch disk. Both flywheels were the same diameter and used the same ring gear. The only difference between 351M and 400 flywheels was the set of holes drilled and tapped for the clutch pressure plate.

Note: Both 351M and 400 engines have the same 28 oz-in crankshaft imbalance, so all M-block flywheels have the same balancing counterweight, and they can be interchanged without vibration or balance problems.

After M-block production ended in 1982, Ford re-engineered the M-block flywheel to accommodate both engines with one part. The current M-block flywheel service part (E5TZ-6375-H) has holes drilled and tapped for both 351M and 400 pressure plates.

When the 351M was introduced in 1975, it used the same flexplate as the 400. When M-block engines were introduced in trucks, the truck engines equipped with automatic transmissions used the same flexplate as the car engines.

The following table lists part numbers for M-block flywheels and flexplates.
