Cam timing sets
When the 400 was introduced in the 1971 model year, it used the
same timing
set (camshaft and crankshaft sprockets and timing chain) as the
351C engines.
The camshaft sprocket and timing chain were both designed
originally for the
351C engine (with D0AE part numbers), and the crankshaft
sprocket was
originally designed for the 1968 Thunderbird 429 engine (with a
C8SE part
number).
In the 1973 model year, Ford retarded the camshaft timing in
351C 2V
and 400 engines for emissions control. To do this, they
redesigned the camshaft
timing set.
The new D3AE timing set used narrower sprockets (13/32" vs.
1/2") for the
camshaft and crankshaft, and a narrower 4-plate chain instead
of the
earlier 5-plate chain. The actual camshaft timing retard was
implemented
by changing the alignment of the keyway and “index” tooth on
the crankshaft
sprocket.
The following table lists M-block cam timing set part numbers.

Some truck engines used the original non-retarded C8SE
crankshaft sprocket,
while others used the retarded D7TE sprocket.
Valve train
The original 351C 2V (and 400) intake and exhaust valves used
single-groove keepers on both valves. Starting in 1978, Ford
changed the M-block
exhaust valve to a multi-groove stem with rotating spring
retainers
to promote valve rotation.
The '78-up M-block exhaust valve requires different keepers,
retainers, and springs. Because of the height difference of the
rotating retainers, the valve springs used on rotating exhaust
valves have shorter free height and installed height, and
therefore,
they allow less lift than the stock intake valve springs. If
you
want to install an aftermarket camshaft for better performance,
you should not use the stock valve springs.
|
CAUTION!
Stock intake valve springs go solid (coil bind) at 0.490"
valve lift.
The stock springs on early non-rotating exhaust valves allow
the same
lift as the stock intake valve springs, but the springs on
the later
rotating exhaust valves go solid at just 0.480" valve lift.
That is
less lift than many popular performance cams provide, even
the milder
ones like the Edelbrock #2172 (0.484/0.510 gross lift) and
the Comp
Cams 255DEH (0.469/0.505 gross lift). Using the stock
rotating
exhaust valve springs and retainers with either of those
cams will
cause bent push rods.

Pistons, pins, and connecting rods
Even though Ford used several different piston designs in
M-block engines
from 1971 to 1982, the piston pin and connecting rods were
never changed.
The M-block connecting rod is unique among Ford engines, but
the piston
pin is actually a 352/390FE design from 1966.
The following table lists M-block piston, pin, and connecting
rod
part numbers.
